Tackling boat maintenance and repair at home is a great way to save money. However, you won’t get very far without the right tools. That is why the experts at 72 Marine Sales have created this guide to boat maintenance tools.

A Moisture Meter

Excess moisture buildup can lead to mold and mildew growth. A moisture meter will provide you with a quick and easy-to-understand digital readout of the moisture levels in and around your vessel, which in turn makes upkeep that much easier.

A Battery Terminal Puller

Basic boat battery maintenance can usually be performed at home. However, without a battery terminal puller, you run the risk of accidentally damaging your boat’s battery every time you remove your battery’s terminals. These tools are cheap and easy to find, so be sure to have one in your tool kit!

A Sharp Blade

A sharp blade can be used to slice lines, cut gaskets, trim rope, cut nets, and more. Since your blade will be exposed to a lot of moisture, look for a model made from titanium or stainless steel to help avoid corrosion. There are even blades designed to float for easier retrieval.

Adjustable Face Spanner Wrench

An adjustable face spanner wrench is an important tool because it allows access to your boat’s sea-strainer, fuel-fill caps, water-fill caps, and outboard motor. Without one, your ability to inspect and repair your boat will be greatly hindered.

Jumper Cables

Jumper cables can be used to restart your boat if something goes wrong with your battery. If you plan to boat in a remote area without many other people around, you might need to bring a spare battery to provide the required charge. Also, bear in mind that cheaper jumper cables might not be able to handle the strain of jumping your boat’s battery.

A Sailor's Multitool

A multitool is a great way to save space. There are all kinds of different models on the market, with varying features such as a marlin spike, small blade, rope cutter, zipper pull, can opener, bottle opener, hex-nut wrench, and/or a paint scraper. Figure out which features you need, and look for a multitool that has them.
